Over the years I got to be good friends with Joe. We've gone out to eat in both Chicago( Crappyville, according to Joe) and Vegas. Back in the 90's I went to a Cubs game with Joe and his producer, Rob Wazinski. Believe me, there was no difference between Joe on the radio and Joe in real life. I've lost a dear friend and sports talk radio lost the best there ever was. I'll bet Joe and Bubba are already setting up the first sports book place in the sky. R.I.P. Joe.

Every couple of months since Joe left the air I've been checking to see if and when he was coming back. So I did again this morning and see this rotten news. Never been another one like Chevalier in sports radio, and there won't be again. All the enjoyment I got from his show over the years, listening to black and gold Al rant, the other regulars; writing in during broadcasts and hearing Joe read the stuff live. Fun, entertaining, informative, engaging. Gone. And now we're stuck with modern day "sports radio". Frankly I'd rather listen to reruns of Chevalier. Wonder if there are any major audio archives of his shows, from One on One in Chicago to the LVRocks days. Could create a site, vintage Papa Joe, 24-7.

I just found out that Papa is gone............ I called in and was there threw the millions fan march threw 9-11-01 what a amazing and great person he was. Papa came to Idaho once and my son and I got a chance to shake his and and he even remembered who I was and all of our conversations. He will be truly missed GOD BE WITH YOU PAPA!

Its been a long time since i have heard papa joe but the one thing that i do remember was his "ncaa field of 64 song".He sang it before the tourmant started i just loved that.Thanks for the laughs joe.

Wow, so sorry to hear the news. I sent a message about 2 or 3 years ago to see how you were doing without any response. My father is sorry to hear about your passing as well. If you remember we were the ones that gave you the ticket for the Masters on a 24hr notice the year that Norman blew his lead. God Bless you Papa Joe and it was a pleasure to have met you.

I am very saddened to hear of this news. We chatted a few times on his show and I loved the fact he moved it to Vegas. Being a sports gambler myself his show was a inside look at Vegas lines etc. He told it like it was, I will miss this man and I know many others will as well. RIP Papa. Thank You for so much.

Just found out today about Papa Joe. Papa Joe was one of a kind. Read the comments. Those aren't from fans, those comments are from friends. Friends who listened to Papa Joe. Listening to Papa Joe was like family....Art in LA, Black and Gold Al. Listening on "Bite me Wednesdays" for Black & Gold Al to call in... Brad 06-19-2011...sums it up perfectly.

This is first time I had realized he had passed away. Wow. Talk about a shock. I remember first listening to him back in the mid 90s. I thought he was the greatest. I always enjoyed his show. From one Black and Gold fan to another.......I tip my hat to you.

I had not heard Papa Joe in a few years now. I remembered how I used to love hearing him on 760 AM San Antonio and decided to look him up on the net to see if I could hear his show again only to discover he has passed. He was one of a kind with his jokes like "Chicago is an old indian word that means, 'It sucks here' ." Rest in peace Papa Joe.
